The Quantum Countdown — When Today's Encryption Is No Longer Safe

Unbearably Bullish with Donald B. Johns III · Sep 11, 2026 · 20 min

Show Notes

Episode 10 of Future Forward Friday on Unbearably Bullish — quantum computing is coming for today's encryption. The countdown has started and every investor, business, and government needs to understand what happens next.

Welcome to Future Forward Friday #10 on the Unbearably Bullish Podcast.

What happens when quantum computers become powerful enough to solve problems beyond the practical reach of conventional machines?

Quantum computing could unlock important advances in medicine, molecular research, materials science, battery development, energy systems, logistics and complex optimization. But a sufficiently capable quantum computer could also threaten some of the public-key encryption used to protect banking systems, medical information, corporate secrets, government communications and digital identities.

In this energetic and educational episode, host Donald Johns explores:

  • How quantum computers and qubits work
  • Classical computing versus quantum computing
  • How quantum computing differs from artificial intelligence
  • Potential applications in medicine, energy and materials science
  • Why RSA and elliptic-curve cryptography could face a future threat
  • “Harvest now, decrypt later” explained
  • Post-quantum cryptography and stronger digital protection
  • Why organizations need crypto-agility
  • The 10-point Quantum Countdown Dashboard
  • Bullish opportunities versus bearish risks
  • The Future Forward Challenge
  • The Bull’s Bottom Line

Today’s quantum computers remain limited by errors, instability and scaling challenges. They are not represented in this program as capable of breaking modern encryption at a commercially meaningful scale.

The exact arrival of a cryptographically relevant quantum computer—sometimes associated with “Q-Day”—is unknown. However, sensitive information captured today could potentially remain valuable for years, making cybersecurity preparation and post-quantum migration important before that capability exists.

The most dangerous time to replace a lock is after someone has already built the key.
